The twin-isle republic of Trinidad & Tobago launched the new G-Pan earlier this month at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine.
The new pan's diameter is 4 inches larger than the old one at 26" and the new spider web design which is being patented offers more notes and octaves at 37 and 3 respectively vs. the oil drum version at only 25 and 2 1/2.
The new G-pan is made from high grade steel sheets as opposed to the method known to this 'land of the pan' of crafting from an oil drum. It may lead to the extinction of the craft of making an oil drum pan as well as the artform since the number of players per steelband has been reduced.
Stay tuned to Radio Trinbago 94.7FM and other T&T stations for the latest on the G-Pan.

What is the big secret. How about placing an audio link to hear the new sounds of the G-pan and a picture of the new look G-pan.

Sitting in on a recent discussion between some heads in pan I learnt that the G-Pan will produce a bigger sound from fewer players. However, players of the different areas e.g. the guitar, will still be needed because although one Gpan can produce many sounds, there is still need for players who will be concentrating on each area.
The G-Pan does not refer to a particular size pan but to a structure which increases the range and quality of sound.
